28 January 2016, National property consultant Carter Jonas has secured planning permission for the site remodelling of long established Killinghall horticultural and garden centre, Daleside Nurseries. The work will enhance the future of the business and is expected to create new job opportunities.

The family-owned plant nursery has occupied the site since 1958 and celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2017.

Following consultations with neighbours, the Parish Council and the local Ward member, the remodelling will see the entrance to the site move around the corner to the recently installed service road, realigning and rationalising of the existing nursery buildings to provide a more efficient layout, new display areas, additional car parking and entrance features; along with new customer facilities and a café – which will create 5 new jobs for the local area.

Daleside Nurseries has evolved organically over the years in keeping with consumer’s increasing interest in plants and gardening. However growing competition saw owners Ray and Stuart Townsend appoint Carter Jonas’ Harrogate Planning Team to advise on ways of developing the business whilst maintaining its core activity as a retail nursery.

We produced a business plan to consider how to make better use of available floor space and to identify the requirements of its customers, along with anticipated future changes to the retail and horticultural market.

Following the planning application submitted in summer 2015, a second application was submitted for housing on the parts of the site which would become redundant as a consequence of the remodelling. The proposed housing will fund the developments on the nursery site as well as meeting part of the substantial housing need in Harrogate.
