The leisure industry in the UK – those businesses offering self-catering holiday accommodation, glamping, caravan sites and so on – has been one of the worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite a strong summer season in 2020, many businesses are concerned about the immediate future, following the Prime Minister’s announcement that they are to stay closed until at least February half term.
We’ve been pleased to hear, therefore, that Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced earlier this month that there will be a further £4.6bn in grant funding available to help leisure businesses, alongside further business rates relief.
Stephen Richards, head of Carter Jonas rural leisure, comments: “January is usually the busiest time of the year for people booking holidays but, sadly this latest lockdown seems to have prompted people to hold off from making holiday plans.
“These grants are a worthwhile lifeline and will pay for some of the ongoing fixed costs of the businesses to help survive the winter months.”
