Carter Jonas has strengthened its Geospatial services with a series of new appointments, including a new head of team.

The firm has appointed Simon Nigh as Head of Mapping and Geospatial. Simon joined Carter Jonas in 2020 with over two decades in the sector.

His previous experience includes roles at Getmapping PLC, as well as in the Geospatial Exploitation Wing with the Royal School of Military Survey and the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps NATO. He has also provided Geospatial analysis products to SME-level organisations and, as a geodetic surveyor, conducted GPS assessments throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Since joining Carter Jonas, Simon has supported the expansion of its national Geographic Information System (GIS) and mapping services. Its Mapping and Geospatial team has grown by 50 per cent over the last two and a half years, including the strengthening of its Measured Survey capabilities in Northampton and launching a GIS Projects team in Birmingham, complementing the work of the existing GIS mapping specialists based there.

Additionally, the business has recruited Mark Kieras as a Partner and Head of Measured Survey. Mark will be based out of Birmingham and has 25 years of experience in the sector. A contemporary of Simon’s, he was also in the British Army, where the duo worked together as part of the Royal Engineers specialising in Geodetic Survey. Mark is renowned as a dynamic and intelligent senior geospatial manager in Land Survey and GIS. He has a proven record of enhancing and developing geospatial requirements in both defence and, more recently, in the commercial sector.

Simon Nigh, Head of Geospatial, said: "Having been with Carter Jonas for over two years, I am excited about the progress that we continue to make, and Mark’s arrival is another milestone in our development. Having known him for many years, I look forward to working with him again, providing a holistic geospatial practice covering all scales and all sectors – from socio-economic strategy to architectural detail and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

“Once considered niche, our services are now being utilised as a part of our multi-disciplinary offering. Innovative technologies help us better understand and contextualise big data, enabling us to support our teams and diverse client base, informing strategies throughout a project’s lifecycle.”

Mark Kieras, Head of Measured Survey, commented: “I look forward to working with Simon once again and developing a complete end-to-end solution, where geospatial data, collected on-site by our expert surveyors, is utilised within cutting-edge GIS platforms to benefit our clients. Additionally, we are enhancing our technical capabilities by introducing the latest capture technology, including both UAV and mobile mapping solutions, to improve efficiency and accuracy. These upgrades will ensure that we continue to provide clients with the most comprehensive advice and strategies whilst further promoting Carter Jonas to the forefront of survey data capture.

“Of course, the technology we employ is only as good as the people using it, and it will be great to work with Simon to develop new talent within the team. I am passionate about our industry and will be mentoring the next generation of geospatial professionals to attain qualifications in our respective disciplines."
