Carter Jonas has bolstered its Minerals and Waste Team with the appointment of Sam Shaikh as an Associate working out of the firm’s offices in Cardiff and Taunton.
The chartered minerals and waste surveyor joins from the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) where he spent five years advising government departments, local authorities and other key stakeholders on non-domestic rating, statutory valuations, compulsory purchase, and compensation matters.
Prior to the VOA, Sam spent three years at Somerset West and Taunton council assisting in community asset transfer negotiations and lease and license renewals for council-owned property. Additionally, he has advised on minerals and waste planning applications, compliance and environmental monitoring and reporting.
Sam’s hiring follows Tamsyn Luggar, who joined Carter Jonas as an Associate at the beginning of this year. Based out of its Cardiff office, Tamsyn works with Carter Jonas’ Head of Minerals and Waste Planning, Karen Hearnshaw, specialising in strategic assessments, planning applications and the coordination of Environment Impact Assessments for minerals and waste developments.
David Sandbrook, Head of Minerals and Waste Management, Carter Jonas, said: “It is a pleasure to welcome Sam to our team. His joining reinforces our client support, particularly in the South West, and I look forward to working with him as we continue to build our business across the UK. With ten specialists now providing advice and guidance across five hub locations, we are well placed to strengthen our remit further whilst advising clients on new and emerging markets. Sam brings strong knowledge and expertise of the sector, having advised clients on a wide range of matters, including minerals estate management, mineral rights and ownership, compulsory purchase and valuation.”
Commenting on his appointment, Sam Shaikh said: “With the advancement of new technologies in both industries and the revival of historic resources, this is a fascinating time to be joining the growing Minerals and Waste Team at Carter Jonas. This is a specialist sector, and Carter Jonas’ team has an excellent reputation. I look forward to working with clients on nationally significant infrastructure projects and providing advice to international mineral operators, landed estates and smaller or independent clients, supporting them through challenges old and new.”
